British Prime Minister’s brother and MP Jo Johnson announced his resignation from government, due to “unresolvable tension” in his role, because he is “torn between family loyalty and the national interest”.
Jo voted to remain in the 2016 Brexit referendum while his brother Boris spearheaded the Leave campaign. When Boris Johnson became the Prime Minister, he promoted Jo to the front bench as business minister.
Boris Johnson thanked his brother for his service, and agreed that they had their “differences” about the European Union.
The political editor of UK newspaper the Sun tweeted that Boris Johnson attempted to convince his brother to reconsider the decision to quit, but did not inform his senior aides about the development.
Boris Johnson declared to a journalist that he would rather be “dead in a ditch” than ask the European Union for a delay on the Brexit deadline.
On Thursday local time, the Government announced it would put forward a new motion for a snap general election after its original one was voted down my MPs. A vote on the new motion is expected to take place on Monday.European diplomats said an election campaign would halt any Brexit talks with the EU.
