US President Donald Trump announced on Twitter that he intends to reverse a decision by the US Treasury to impose additional sanctions on North Korea.
The reason is because he “likes” North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un and doesn’t think sanctions are necessary.
Mr Trump did not specify which sanctions would be reversed.
On Thursday the US sanctioned made their first move after the failed Trump-Kim Summit in Vietnam did not make any progress on nuclear disarmament negotiations – and sanctioned two Chinese shipping companies, Dalian Haibo International Freight Co Ltd and Liaoning Danxing International Forwarding Co Ltd, who they alleged helped Pyongyang evade US sanctions.
Mr Trump’s security advisor John Boltonhad described the move as an “important” action to “stop North Korea’s illicit shipping practices”.
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said on Friday that Mr Trump “likes Chairman Kim and he doesn’t think these sanctions will be necessary”.
