US President Donald Trump responded to the impeachment vote on this week, and House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s delay in handing the impeachment to the Senate until she finds out how Republicans would manage the proceeding, by calling for an immediate Senate trial on Twitter.
In the same series of tweets, Mr Trump accused the democrats of not giving him due process, and having “zero proof of anything”.
Ms Pelosi said, “So far we haven’t seen anything that looks fair to us… We’d like to see a fair process, but we’ll see what they have and will be ready for whatever it is.”
The Senate leaders from their respective parties, Mitch McConnell for the Republicans and o Chuck Schumer for the Democrats, have to discuss trial arrangements, but are yet to reach agreement.
Mr Trump is the third president in US history to be impeached. He has been accused of abusing his power by pressuring Ukraine to investigate his political rival, former US vice-president Joe Biden, and a discredited theory that Democrats conspired with Ukraine to meddle in the 2016 election.
