WA Police have charged two people after attempting to evade police in a stolen vehicle in Maddington.
The two people, a 31-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man from Northam stole the vehicle, a silver Toyota Tarago, from a home in Sawyers Valley during a burglary between 1:30am and 4:00am yesterday.
Police spotted the stolen vehicle at around 11:50am in the Maddington area, attempting to stop it on Westfield Street, but the driver did not stop the car and accelerated away onto Revesby Street.
It continued onto Alcock Street, losing control on Maddington Road, causing it to crash into a power pole, before colliding with a fence.
The female driver attempted to climb out of the driver’s side window and was arrested, while the male passenger was trapped inside the vehicle.
The vehicle caught fire and officers used a fire extinguisher from a police vehicle to put out the fire.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services attended the incident and freed the passenger from the car, joined by St John Ambulance and Western Power crews.
Both occupants were taken to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment.
The woman was charged with aggravated burglary, stealing, stealing a motor vehicle, failing to stop, reckless driving and no authority to drive.
She was refused bail and is due to appear in the Midland Magistrates Court today.
The man was charged with aggravated burglary, stealing, stealing a motor vehicle and stealing in an unrelated fuel drive off incident in Northam.
He is due to appear in the Midland Magistrates Court on Friday.
