The Shadow minister for the Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence, MLC Nick Goiran, has hit out at the McGowan Government, saying they show a “disrespectful lack of commitment” to fighting elder abuse.
According to Nick Goiran, The Select Committee into Elder Abuse, completed a report in September 2018 and recommended the Government urgently amend the Guardianship and Administration Act 1990.
Goiran says the issue is rife.
“Elder abuse affects 1 in 20 older people in Western Australia, and elder abuse support and referral agencies such as Advocare and the Older People’s Rights Service report that these numbers are conservative.”
Goiran says despite raising the issue in Parliament 13 times in the last two years and an election commitment to made by the Government in 2017, there has been no action.
“As at 25 June 2020 when Parliament rose for its last winter recess in this term of government, there has been no sign of any such Bill being introduced in WA Parliament.”
