A student, who just turned 16, brought a .45 calibre semi-automatic handgun and open fired in a Saugus High school in Southern California, about 65 km north of Los Angeles.
He killed a 16 year old girl, a 14 year old boy and wounded three more teenagers before turning the gun on himself.
Lines of students were escorted from the school by armed police, and several injured had to be moved on gurneys.
FBI agent Paul Delacourt said that “At this point, we have no indication of any motive or ideology.”Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said six people were shot, including the 16-year-old student suspect himself.
This is at least the 85th incident of gunfire on school grounds this year, according to Everytown, an advocacy group pushing for stricter gun laws.
Repeated mass shootings in recent years have intensified gun control debates in the US, given there is a constitutional right for citizens to keep and bear arms.
