US warns Assad against delaying process to end Syrian war

US special representative for Syria, Jim Jeffrey, declared that the US will impose sanctions to pursue “a strategy of isolation” with its allies if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad holds up the political process aiming to end the Syrian war.

Mr Jeffrey warned that Washington would work with allies in Europe, Asia and the Middle East to impose sanctions on the Assad government if it did not cooperate with rewriting the Syrian constitution prior to elections.

“If the regime does that, we believe that then we can go after it the way we went after Iran before 2015 – with really tough international sanctions,” Mr Jeffrey said.

“Even if the U.N. Security Council won’t pass them we will just do it through the European Union, we will do it through our Asian allies, and then we will make it our business to make life as miserable as possible for that flopping cadaver of a regime and let the Russians and Iranians, who made this mess, get out of it.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned western powers against undermining the UN efforts to end the seven-year conflict.

He gave the warning as he announced Moscow had started delivering S-300 surface-to-air missile systems to Syria.
