At least 17 people were killed and over 120 injured when an Air India Express Boeing 737-800 plane overshot the runway in heavy rain, and crashed down a slope on its second attempt to land.
There were 191 passengers and crew on board, including 10 infants. It is understood that one of the pilots died in the crash.
Local police said that at least 15 of the injured were in a serious condition and being treated in local hospitals and there are fears that the death toll will rise further.
The plane split into at least two pieces after the crash.Several people were stuck inside the wreckage and had to be cut out with special equipment.
According to local police, the rescue operation has been completed, and they are now focusing on collecting and sorting people’s belongings scattered around the runway.
The flight was a Dubai to Calicut COVID-19 evacuation flight, one of hundreds in recent months to bring thousands of Indians stranded overseas due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
